fun with hot glass

We had an amazing time with Kim Fraczek last Saturday. She brought her whole glassblowing setup and made custom pieces for folks who stopped by.

The first was a pair of glass bulb pendants with tiny stone fossils trapped inside.

Another was a piece for this little girl, a small Swiss coin trapped in a glass bubble. Perhaps the coin was a gift from the Tooth Fairy! Here’s a video of Kim working on it.

She also made a ring for Phil in purple and green to match his bowling ball.

The weather was not great at first but it cleared up, becoming a lovely day for a craft show.

Our next Second Saturday event will be November 14. It will be hard to top this one, but it will be our Second AnniVIXary party that day. The craft show will be on too, moving indoors to Danger Danger Gallery, 5013 Baltimore. (Email satellite2ndsaturday@gmail.com if you are interested in vending.) Hope to see you there!

the very first second

It’s the first of our Second Saturday events, get it?

a show of work by digital collage artist Jen McCleary

a show of work by digital collage artist Jen McCleary, plus special guest Shakey Lyman!

As part of the Satellite Second Saturday: Arts Galore on Baltimore series, we will be hosting a show by local artist Jen McCleary, whose work includes paintings, photography, digital collage and mixed media jewelry. We have represented her artwork for some time, like her amazing vintage optician’s lens pendants, but she will be bringing many new pieces that will be available only at the show, so be sure to check it out. We’ll also have refreshments, and as a special treat: live blues by the legendary Shakey Lyman!

The craft show on the triangle outside starts at 11 and will include over 20 local artisans. Jen’s show starts at 12, and Shakey will probably get going at about 1. We hear there’s even going to be a flea market at the church, so it sounds like a perfect day to head over to 50th & Baltimore! Hope the weather’s nice! Saturday, August 8.

images of “images”

We had a great time last weekend! Lots of folks stopped by to check out Mike’s stained glass work. Unfortunately, I neglected to get a photo of the artist himself! But here’s some of his best work: baby Ellie, a collaborative project with wife Wilder.

The jewelry was a big hit too, earrings and pendants with and without vintage images.

The fiddle player canceled at the last minute, but our friend Bill Hangley came by and played some of his songs instead. He was tremendous! Thanks, Bill!

Our next event will feature painter Julie Abrams — stay tuned!

images under glass

Please join us for our next in-store event, featuring new work by a longtime West Philly resident, Mike Scott-Straight. His jewelry, bits of stained glass and broken pottery set in metal, has been a perennial favorite here at VIX. He is now incorporating found vintage images into some of his work, jewelry as well as some larger pieces, like this Art Deco inspired mirror. Trey will set the mood with his nineteenth century fiddlin’, and refreshments will be served. Join us, won’t you?

Thanks to everyone who came out to our event on Saturday. We had a great time. Keith sold several of his amazing pieces, including my favorite, a fabulous brass pair of earrings. We see him here proudly showing his newest work, including the hat he’s wearing, made of fabric from a salvaged pair of pants. (I don’t think he’s in the hat business just yet, though.)

People of all ages (and a cat) lingered to listen to Birdie Busch’s lovely music until long into the evening.

This curious little fellow sneaked in to listen to the music, I guess. He’s very cute. I hope he found his way home safely.

It’s been too long since we had an event here at VIX. I forgot how much fun they can be! Our next one is planned for Saturday, September 13, featuring our good friend and brand-new dad, stained glass artist Mike Straight. Music TBA. Hope to see you then!

just married!

Last Saturday, the partners behind VIX made their partnership truly official. Emily and Sean were married on July 12, 2008 in an intimate and joyous ceremony, followed by lunch with a few close friends and family, then an overnight getaway at the Jersey shore. It was a wonderful day and the couple look forward to sharing many, many more together.

Stop by and wish them well if you like! There’s even a party at the store Saturday night…

“handwrought”

\"handwrought\"

Please join us for our next in-store event, when two very talented artists will be featured.

Keith King’s bold jewelry designs have made quite an impact at VIX — we’ve really never seen anything like them. He sculpts wire and sheet metal into dramatic and unusual jewelry, primarily earrings, but lately he’s been branching out into bracelets and other wearable art. Meet the artist and see some of his newest one-of-a-kind creations in silver, copper and brass.

Also joining us will be songstress Birdie Busch with a solo performance of some of her original compositions. Her music is whimsical and upbeat, with clever and inventive lyrics. She is truly a refreshing voice in the local singer-songwriter scene. A West Philly resident, she has two albums under her belt, “The Ways We Try” and “Penny Arcade”, both of which are available at VIX.

We’re honored to have both of these artists join us and we hope you will, too. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday, July 19, 6-9 pm.

fabtacular trunk show

Salesmen used to travel far and wide, peddling exotic goods out of their immense trunks, hence the name. Our next event will feature three artists of divergent styles, traversing the city to show us some wares, play music and have a little wine and cheese.

Nicole Rae Styer has an unmistakable way of embellishing the living daylights out of something. She layers tons of different fabrics together with decorative stitching techniques to create her playful designs. VIX has a collection of her handbags, neckties and panties (above, in suitcase on right) as well as some clothing and accessories.

Lauren Marsella (first in our sporadic series of VIX Picks on this blog) is a Philly artist currently specializing in hand-colored shrink plastic renditions of cultural icons. She makes jewelry out of them.

Music of the electronic variety will be provided by Artless Living. They will bring their laptops and possibly various other gadgets with knobs and things. They probably won’t need a trunk for all of them, though. It’s all digital these days.

Join us, won’t you? You’ll have a fabtacular time. 😉
